Bucco.....Brett?
Down in Central Florida, on the brink of training camp, the local press seems to have gone slightly mad over our Green old friend, Brett Favre. In theory, Tampa seems like a good destination for the "retired" Packers gunslinger. Always room for a quarterback (Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Luke McCown, Chris Simms and rookie Josh Johnson). Old pal, coach Jon Gruden.

Position Outlook: Offensive Line

field.jpgThis group could be the strength of the Buccaneers offense this coming season, or a disaster. This is the youngest unit in all of the NFL. This group of former first and second round picks for the most part needs to basically take the next step foward.

Position Outlook: Tight End
field.jpgTight end has 5 names currently on the roster, 4 of which are viable options to start.  This is due to the fact that none of said options is an absolute, honest-to-goodness, surefire starter on any team, let alone in this derby.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Defense
field.jpgUnder defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have more often than not been a top-10 unit. Kiffin's now famous Tampa-2 (based on the cover-2 scheme) has been a mainstay of the team for over 10 years now.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Offense
field.jpgNo team in the NFC South (since its 2002 inception) has gone back-to-back with division title wins. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Head Coach Jon Gruden has failed in 2002 (Super Bowl hangover, see Johnson, Keyshawn) and 2005 (see Shepherd, Edell). But, with a slew of veterans and leaders with a real mix of youth, could this be the year to break the "curse" of the NFC South?

Position Outlook: Receivers
A position burgeoning with young talent? Or a mediocre group that will be relying on two 30-somethings to caryy it? Are you an optimist or a pessimist because no position on the team garners a broader range of opinions than wide receiver. It all comes down to how you look at it.

Drunkards, Light Post and the Myth of 370
07/27/08
Running back overuse has been a hot topic in the NFL lately, partly because of Football Outsiders' promotion of their "Curse of 370" theory. In several articles in several outlets, including their annual Prospectus tome, they make the case that there is statistical proof that running backs suffer significant setbacks in the year following a season of very high carries. But a close examination reveals a different story. Is there really a curse of 370? Do running backs really suffer from overuse?
Player IQ by position
07/18/08
Data visualization expert Ben Fry created some great graphs of each NFL position's average Wonderlic scores. Quarterbacks, centers, and offensive tackles tend to be the smartest while running backs and receivers average sub-100 IQs. The data came from this ESPN Page 2 article. Both links offer some interesting observations and comparisons. ESPN even offers you the opportunity to test yourself.
Game Theory Run/Pass Balance
06/13/08
Previous research on the balance between running and passing in the NFL has largely missed the mark because it has focused on only half of the equation. Opposing defenses have been ignored. In this article, I'll illustrate how game theory can be applied to football play calling, and how it explains the balance between various strategies.

Should the Bucs acquire Brett Favre?
